Saputi and haputi – Alana

Rita’s story reminded me of my visit once to Kugaaruk (Pelly Bay) where the Netsilik people still use haputiit, or saputet in Labrador dialect. They have a western dialect so most of what is used as s sound in the east is h in their dialect. I never made it to the haputi but people told me about it so I felt as if I had seen it. I remember I bought a toy kakivak or spear which catches and kills the fish at the same time. I was told they taste better that way because they do not drown.

You can see a movie of the Netsilik fishing at a haputi on the NFB site.
